I have such a soft spot for our community’s outdoor rinks; they were where I taught my children to skate, creating memories that last a lifetime. Volunteers run the vast majority of these rink, either in partnership with community associations or as individuals. These folks are out at all hours of the day, flooding the rink, maintaining the ice, clearing the surface after a snowfall… their work only ends with spring thaws arrive.
These boarded and puddle rinks are free for anyone to use, they provide neighbourhoods with a gathering place and a site to enjoy winter in an active way. I want to thank the volunteers who operate these rinks for everything they do. There’s rarely a time I pass by these rinks that they are not being used by large groups of families and young people.
Our community is better for the work of volunteers, and our outdoor rink volunteers are a prime example of this. Thank you all.
