The pressing need to invest in our aging infrastructure is something I hear often from residents and something I echo at budget time, and in seemingly every conversation I have with infrastructure staff. While I sometimes feel like a broken record, I will continue to say time and again: Investing in our aging infrastructure is an absolutely necessity. It allows us to safely move around our community, enjoy our shared spaces, preserve our current amenities, and saves us money in the long run. We either invest in upkeep today, or we pay a much bigger bill down the road when the infrastructure fails and needs emergency repairs. To me it is common sense.
I am very pleased to share with you all that this year, our community will see major investments in several projects, including repaving of major roadways, such as parts of Jeanne d’Arc – both north and south, the extension of the Innes Road repaving work, extending west of the Bypass, and multiple pathway and sidewalk projects will continue in the summer. Excitingly, we will also see further investments in our park amenities, including new play structures, splashpads, signage, and benches.
This is exciting news for our community as we see these largescale projects completed over the next many months. However, we need there is still much to do, and I am not finished pushing to see our community’s infrastructure receive the attention it requires. I am often out walking and biking through our community checking out the conditions of everything from pathways to roads, to bus stops, greenspaces and more. I will continue to flag these needs with City staff and insist on prioritizing these investments in each and every City budget.
